Japanese New Year's Decoration
Xishi Elementary School has a sister school in Japan, and every year they celebrate Japanese New Year as a cultural exchange. One of the ways they celebrate the Japanese New Year is by making a Japanese new year decoration called shimekazari. The students make shimekazari out of rice straw rope (shimenawa). Other good luck charms are attached to these straw wreaths as well. The shimekazri are hung on doors to invite gods of good fortune and keep evil spirits away.
